To the Editor S. C. M. Post – A very long reply letter from H. W. Ray. It mentioned that the position of the Cinema Theatres in Hongkong today is that they make smaller profits on their turnover than the European retail houses. It should be understood that, for the theatre business, a proportion of the value of empty seats must be paid for those occupied. When arranging for the reseating of the 'Coronet,' we were quoted a figure which represented over 83% on the price quoted by the actual prospective maker to the middleman firm. It is reasonably obvious that 'Fairplay' is tilting in particular at the charges of the 'World' Theatre in connexion with the Dempsey-Carpentier film. Now, I can scarcely be accused of grinding the axe of Hongkong Amusements, Ltd., if I deal with this case. My Company considers that the Cinema Theatres are entitled to a gross profit of 20% on turnover. A single example of the extraordinary fickleness of the Public was the attendance for 'Alf's Button.' We dropped in four days from capacity to 80%. Then an advertisement of one more day brought capacity again.
