Summary

(To the Editor, S. C. M. Post) I am moved to this reflection by the statement of 'New Arrival,' who tells of a small English town with five cinemas, and one Super Cinema. The Super Cinema had: 1. Twenty instrumentalists in its cinema orchestra; 2. Big pictures which is screened on the day of their first release in England; 3. Films which Afterwants (after they had blushed unrecognised in America and elsewhere) became 'Universally famous'; 4. No seat higher priced than 1/6. Should I find that such a picture lover's paradise really exists I will apologise for doubting him. Both 'New Arrival' and 'Ennui' seem to have entirely misunderstood my reference to ceasing to cater especially for Europeans at the Coronet. At the Pearl in Canton, we give a composite performance that attracts both the foreign and Chinese populations. It would mean that we should cease to get films that did not have an appeal to Chinese audiences. Thus 'Robin Hood,' 'The Mark of Zorro,' 'The Prisoner of Zenda' and the like, would be always welcome, but films like 'Smilin' Through,' 'The Miracle Man' 'Hunting Big Game,' 'Pollyanna,' 'Human Hearts,' 'The Turning Point,' would no longer be shown, while, little by little, Chinese titles would creep into all the pictures.
