In order to make a picturization of Booth Tarkington's famous 'Penrod' that would conform to his ideals of the tale in screen form, Marshall Neilan was compelled to 'corer' the child market in Hollywood. In addition to the principal roles of the west at the time the picrod and his chums about two score juveniles are used as extras for the scenes of the amateur theatricals, the dancing school as well as sessions of the American Boys' Protective Association. Gordon Griffith, who appeared in 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' with Mary Pickford was selected. 'Sunshine' Sammy Morrison, the darkie in Hal Roach comedies and brother 'Florence' were selected. 'Baby' Peggy Montgomery, three-year-old star in Century Comedies and Newton Hall who was the sissy of Dinty have prominent roles.
