Summary

(Tientsin, Sept. 19) There is a great deal of talk among respectable Chinese regarding the theatres now running on the German concession, in which female actresses appear on the stage. They complain that they are such as would not be allowed by the Chinese authorities, and that in the case of the first one opened, the officials desired to suppress it as being immoral, calculated to do great hand, and contrary, as we all know it is, to Chinese ideas on these matters, and that the Germans refused any interference on the part of the officials, saying that it brought a great many Chinese to their concession – meaning money of course; and they could not permit its suppression. If this is true it is a great shame, and much to the discredit of our German neighbours. They should rather set a good example, than lay themselves open to criticism by the Chinese.
