At the Magistracy yesterday, the Assistant Manager of the Hongkong Cinema was summoned by sub-Inspector Clarke for posting the theatre's advertisements on the wall of a Government building near the Peak Tramway Station. The building in question is a chair coolies' shed. Mr. Ray, the proprietor of the Coronet Cinema, who was summoned for the same offence, asked his Worship to take his case with that of the Hongkong Theatre, as he could explain the circumstances more clearly than the sub-Manager of the Hongkong Theatre. His Worship having granted the application, Mr Ray stated that about two and a half years ago, when he was the manager of the old Victoria Cinema, he came to an arrangement with Mr. Buyers of the Peak Tramway Company, whereby he was allowed to erect a poster board in the position new complained of by the Police. This spot was the only place available. When the Victoria Theatre ceased to exist the poster board was still there. The Police had on several occasions complained to him of his posters being put up on Government buildings, but they did not mention any particular building. Mr Ray had been imposed a fine of $1.
