Summary

When Charlie Chaplin appeared in person as an artist at the Tivoli in the Fred Karno sketch 'Mumming Bird,' he was earning 2.10 pounds a week. When his filmed self was shown in 'The Gold Rush,' 1,000 pounds was paid for the week's run of the picture, 6,000 pounds was taken at the doors, and the entire traffic in the Strand was stopped on a score of occasions by the crush of people driving up in the motor-cars. Such, in a few words, is the romance which makes Charlie Chaplin the idol of London.
