Summary

The H. B. Waring Company opens its season at the Theatre Royal tonight, when 'The Witness for the Defence' will be staged. The company, which arrived here by s. s. Nile, comes with a big reputation, and its visit is being keenly anticipated. Miss MacFarlane, the advance agent of the company, speaks most enthusiastically of the high-class nature of the show of which we have already published several notices. She goes on to Singapore to arrange for the tour of the Royal Opera Company which will come to Hongkong in September and which is spoken of as one of the very finest musical combinations ever seen out East. Mr. Charles Quartermaine, who is starring with the H. B. Waring Company, in addition to his well-known reputation as one of the finest actors of his day, is now very popular in the film world. One of his greatest successes in that sphere has been the role of Amyas Leigh in 'Westward Ho,' Chas. Kingsley's famous novel. In the company's opening piece, the well-known Anglo-Indian drama, 'The Witness for the Defence,' Chas. Quartermaine takes the part of Thresk. Picture included.
