Summary

The famous Griffith picture 'Way Down East' was surrendered this month to Mr. George Mooser, representative of the United Artists Corporation. It marked the first victory of the United Artists Corporation in the fight being waged against motion picture film piracy. For background information, duplicates of some of the most famous American and British pictures have been shown in Japanese cinema halls for some considerable time. In the case of 'Way Down East,' Mr. Kato and Mr. Takemura both claimed that they had the sole rights for the showing of this picture in Japan. Mr. Kato immediately communicated with the United Artists Corporation in America, the company he had purchased the rights. At last, Mr. Takemura wrote to the Police that he had purchased the film in Hongkong through an agent, and that he would surrender the film. It is believed that there is considerable 'business' being done in duplicating well-known British and American films. The films that have been duplicated include 'The Three Musketeers,' 'The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,' 'Suds,' and 'Pollyanna.'
