Summary
A great clearance has been made on that plot of ground opposite the Central Market and on which the Empire Cinema formerly stood. The ground is a reserved plot for the Government scheme for the extension of the 'Central Market' and until such time as that scheme matures, the plot is let out on lease for three years at a stretch and is put up for tender as each successive lease expires. It appears that the proprietors of the Empire Theatre successful in their tender this year, but negotiations were commenced with the party whose tender was accepted for the taking over of the theatre. The parties could not come to terms, however, and therefore the building had to be pulled down. We understand that a new cinema will be erected on the site.
