Summary

The newest organisation to enter the field of film production is the James B. Leong Productions, Inc., with offices at 1240 Maral Strong Bldg, Los Angeles, California, which was incorporated under the laws of State of California, 27th October 1919, with James B. Leong, President and General Manager; Dr. Siu Yee Chong, Secretary; Low Song Kai, Treasurer; Chow Kim, Director; T. A. Russell, Director. Most of the capital stock has been subscribed by prominent Chinese merchants of Los Angeles and San Francisco. American interests are also represented. The object of the company is to produce high-class Chinese pictures of real Chinese life. To produce a Chinese play correctly is not an easy task. One must be familiar with the Northern and Southern part of the country before he can put out a product suitable for the entire Chinese community. 'The Porcelain Bell of China' is the title of an original story by James B. Leong, and will be dramatised by well-known scenario writers and the author for the purpose of depicting on the screen. James B. Leong did the technical work for 'Broken Blossoms,' directed by D.W. Griffith; 'The Red Lantern,' Metro; 'The Pagan God,' Jesse D. Hampton, 'The Mystery Faces,' Triangle; 'All in a Night,' Lasky. This spectacular production costing more than $250,000, a greater photoplay than 'The Red Lantern.' The company is contemplating to produce two-reels Chinese comedies – featuring a well-known Oriental Star. Mr. Leong states that he will rent studio space from a local company for their first production.
