Summary

The first public performance given in Hongkong of Mr. T. Edison's invention – The Kinetophone, took place in the Theatre Royal last night. The new invention, in its remarkably life-like presentation of sounds and actions synchronising, is wonderful but by no means perfect. It displayed six items – A young lady suddenly appeared in view on the screen and immediately gave evidence of possessing a pleasing voice; a few pieces of crockery were dropped and the smashing sound that followed was perfect; The 'Quarrel Scene' from 'Julius Caesar' by two American actors was not entirely successful. A small portion of 'The Chimes of Normandy' gave an opportunity of seeing action and hearing music in combination was very well done. In 'An Indian Girl's Revenge,' the result is not very well. 'Jack's Joke' however, was completely successful and amusing.
