Summary

When Mr. So Chung-son bought up that of land which comprises the western boundary of the Old Post Office site, the plan he then had in mind was the erection thereon of a sky-scraper as a substantial contribution towards the demand for office accommodation. However, there are other means of securing a quick return on his capital by constructing a large, well-equipped and up-to-date building which could be alternatively used for the projection of cinema films or for the production of plays. Under the attention of a large gang of coolies, the last vestige of the Hongkong Cinema Theatre is soon to disappear, to give place to a structure. The architects will be Messrs Palmer and Turner. There will be seats provided for 542 people in the stalls and pit, 270 in the dress circle and 416 in the upper dress circle. Patrons will pass through the main entrance in Queen's Road, which will be shaded with a canopy, to find themselves in the foyer, where the booking office will be situated and staircases will lead to the dress-circle on either side. All the doors will be fitted with emergency panic bolts, and the fire-fighting apparatus will be liberal. The new enterprise will represent a capital outlay of about one million dollars.
