Summary

With the opening of the Queen's Theatre, Hongkong at last has a theatre in keeping with her progress in other directions. In decoration, ventilation, lighting and general cosiness, this new hall on Queen's Road is far ahead of anything the Colony has of the same nature. The balcony and gallery reach far back, and every patron of the house will have an uninterrupted view of the stage, for there are no pillars or supports to obstruct the line of vision. Decorations in the entrance hall for yesterday's ceremony were carried out by Kum Yuk Lau of Cochrane Street. The opening ceremony was performed by the Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotewall who was greeted by a bombardment of crackers fired on the stage of the Theatre. Mr. Kotewall congratulated Mr. Ma Tsui-chiu upon the architectural excellence of the building. With Mr. Kotewall, were Mr. Li Po-kwai, Chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and Directors of the Po Leung Kuk, and the Tung Wah Hospital. Mr. Ng Wah was the builder who carried out the erection of the Theatre. H. E. the Governor arrived at 3 p.m. and was escorted to his box by Mr. Kotewall, Mr. Ma Tsui-chiu, and Mr. Leung Cheuk-kee. An amusing series of short comedy films was then shown. From, and including today, the theatre will be open to the general public with seats at prices suited to all pockets.
